WWE 2K14 was developed by Yukes Visual Concepts and published by 2K Sports, and was released in North America on October 29, 2013. After the original publishers (THQ) went bankrupt, 2K Sports bought the rights to create the WWE series. With all new gameplay, this game is one for the history books.
The gameplay has never been faster with new modes and new moveset technology. The striking attacks are faster and harder to reverse so if you’re down, you better be a ring general or you’re gonna take a loss. This game has something for everyone, whether you are a wrestling fanatic or a new fan. Such features include the 30 Years of WrestleMania mode. This allows you to take a walk down the ramp to the most memorable matches, and learn backstory you may not have known.
If you have never played a WWE game before, it won’t be hard to learn the controls, as a lot of the mechanics are easily used. Reading the manual is your best bet for being a pro after a minimum of three matches. The controls are not complicated and can be easily manipulated to your liking by the “edit move set” mode in creations. This is where you can change all superstars moves all the way down to how they enter and exit the ring.
Which leads to the creation mode of the game. With options like the “Create a Superstar” and “Title Creator” the possibility is to your imagination. With detailed tutorials and reminders throughout the creation modes, they are easy to use and you never have a moment where you feel as though the games in control. Along with creating personal arenas and finishers, you can edit some aspects of the pre-set roster. From attire to entrances, you can make the WWE your personal play ground.
Speaking of playground, one of the best parts of the WWE video games is the WWE Universe mode where storylines and insane events turn twists in the road. Completely controlled by, you guessed it, you! With the ability to create a show with your own champions and roster, to interfering in a superstars match, to firing people with a few simple taps of the button. The WWE and all its superstars, including your created characters are yours to control!
A beautifully animated game with perfect combat mechanics is bound to contain some glitches. Now these aren't the sort of game crashing glitches in other games. These will make you watch the replay just to try and understand how a chair went spinning into the air, or how a superstar stretched their body like the elastic man. These glitches can make anyone LOL.
The dialog of the game is probably one of the only downsides. Very repetitive speech from the commentators through the matches and sometimes, they even mess up on who they are talking about. The music can be taken both ways because its all music from within WWE, so there’s nothing too special about it.
The only other downside is the WWE Online match servers. If you’re lucky enough to find a suitable server, its usually hosted by someone who is going to be a hardcore WWE gamer. I consider myself a skilled competitor, and even I get brutalized online. Plus the servers are never reliable in the first place. An upside to the online features, however, would be the Online creations, where you can upload and download creations such as Superstars, Arenas, Belts, and Storylines.
With all of the features in this game, it makes WWE 2K14 a must for the Old School wrestling fans, to the New Generation of the WWE Universe.
Final Rating: 9/10
